about lessons

Different forms of yodeling emerged all around the world long before cell phones and were integrated into cultures and music. The YODELCOURSE focuses on the Alpine form.

Before we get started we need to learn the language of Alpine yodeling. Though not really a language, yodeling has its own vowel and consonant combinations specific to different languages. For the YODELCOURSE, we will use English sounds.

The sounds we will be using to yodel are:
oo as in boot
del as in yodel
la as in lot

yo as in yogurt
ho as in hotel
ee as in greet
i as in eye

oh as in show
ro as in row
dee as in deep
lay as in lay

Here are some terms I will be using throughout the course:
Chest Voice
  • a particular part of the vocal range or type of vocal register
  • the lowest register of the voice in singing or speaking.
Foundation Notes
  • in yodeling the low notes in a yodel passage
  • notes sung in the chest voice in a yodel passage
Head Voice / Falsetto
  • one of the high registers of the voice in speaking or singing, above chest voice.
  • The amazing high notes in a yodel

What's in a Lesson?

Introduction

Each lesson includes an introduction explaining the yodel figure used. In addition, any new sounds included will be explained in the introduction.
Picture
Lessons

Each lesson consists of the basic yodel figure, and any notable passages that  the learner might need to isolate. The lessons have music notation, audio recordings and YouTube videos.

YodelBurst

Sometimes don't you feel like bursting out laughing? Well this is the yodel equivalent. Just let this flash of yodeling happen wherever you are. It could happen in the car, at a coffee shop, or even at a baseball game.

Performance

After practicing the lesson, you are ready for the Performance of the lesson. Practice this yodel, record it and post it on YouTube with the other lesson performances. Send  links for  all 5 of your performances, and receive your Student Certificate of Yodelology. Also, your YouTube playlist will be featured on the YODELCOURSE.ORG website.

 Yodeling With Friends

Get your friends, neighbors, siblings or people you like together for these yodels. Norm, Brian, and Mike get together for 3 times the fun in "Yodeling With Friends". The notations for the parts are included as well as a YouTube video and Karaoke recording so you and your friends can yodel.
 Featured Yodel Personality / Artist

For each lesson, a person or artist  has been selected that has contributed to yodeling.

Yodel WarmUp

Warming up is important for any singer. It stretches the vocal folds and increases blood flow to the larynx and other body parts including your lungs, lips and tongue. (Emphasis on the tongue)  It will clear away that gravelly sound created by mucus.(yuck)

Before each yodel practice session use these two steps to get your voice ready. Think of them as yodelyoga.

Picture

Step 1
Use the foundation notes from Lesson 1 to warm up. Transpose the key half steps up and back down as you would a scale.

Picture

Step 2
Use the basic yodel figure from Lesson 2 to warm up your jump to falsetto and back. Transpose the key half steps up and back down as you would a scale.
